Movie: There Will Be Blood

There Will Be Blood is a searing deconstruction of the American Dream. The film uses oil prospector Daniel Plainview to explore how greed, capitalism, and religion can act as hollow, monstrous forces. It shows a man who achieves absolute wealth and power, only to lose his humanity and end up utterly isolated.
Paul Thomas Anderson made this film as a study of appetite. What happens when ambition has no ceiling and no rival strong enough to check it? What does capitalism do to a man who has nothing left to believe in but his own success? And can a person build something enormous without being consumed by it?
Watch for how every relationship in the film is a transaction: father and son, oilman and preacher, partner and rival. And ask yourself: when does ambition stop building a life, and start hollowing one out?
